world info
This version of earth is essentially the same as ours (currently in 2020) in terms of technology, geography and the like. The main difference is that supernatural beings that exist live among regular humans and can be found in pockets globally. Supernatural beings are rarer than ordinary humans are, so the population is slightly skewed; that being said, New Lodgins, USA -- inhabited by both ordinary and supernatural beings -- is known for being the prime location for the supernatural to find resources and acceptance in the community.
As peaceful and welcoming as it sounds on the outside, though, New Lodgins is not perfect. Sometimes, when those with supernatural gifts lose control of their abilities, tempers, and what have you, things go a little haywire. Those cases require people with the right equipment and training to solve them. These people are known as Agents, who make up a special task force that handles supernatural-related incidents. They don’t do investigations; rather, they’re there for mediation, keeping others out of harm’s way, and ending the situation at hand.
An Agent is considered a position of prestige, due to the perks that come along with the job as well as the level of knowledge and skill required to become one. Some people spend their entire childhood training to get into an Agency, as spots are very limited and also very competitive. There are several Agencies, often employing normal people alongside supernaturally gifted ones. The more elite agencies, like The Tempest, often prefer exploring the supernatural and hiring and assigning a normal human is incredibly rare. Agencies like The Tempest typically hire normal humans for office positions -- it's incredibly difficult for a standard human to be brought on as an Agent in these kinds of Agencies.
To become an Agent, one must have enough knowledge on the various types of registered supernatural beings living in New Lodgins, be combat ready and strategic, and be on standby even on their off days in case of an emergency. It’s a tough job, but the bonuses are great: the pay is phenomenal, housing assistance, and discounts at a good number of places in the city. Most of all, though, Agents are given an item that’s considered very desirable in New Lodgins: Charms.
Part of New Lodgin’s economy is fueled by magical Charms, which are exactly what they sound like -- Charms for good luck, fortune, love, you name it! They aren’t foolproof, but those with charms have had a history of leading generally healthier, happier lives. They’re extremely desirable and incredibly time-consuming to make, which means they’re expensive and only some people can afford them. Only certain people born with the natural ability to create them can actually make them work. However, because the magic isn’t very visible and their results can be rather circumstantial, it’s difficult to verify if a Charm is legitimate or not.
While being part of the supernatural can be tough, New Lodgins provides a lot of support to those in need. Training facilities are available for people to safely become acquainted with, hone, and master their abilities. Counseling services are also provided alongside other accommodations as needed. Some ordinary folk are frightened by monsters specifically (werewolves, vampires and such) but for the most part, things are relatively under control here. That isn’t to say that there aren’t unfortunate incidents, but when they happen, you bet that the entire city’s going to hear about them, regardless of whether they were started by a human or a member of the supernatural.
